PREVENTION!
Listen to the experts ... AUTHORS
& AUTHORITIES
- Paul
Zane Pilzer, author of The Next Trillion:
"It is now known that greatly exceeding the RDA levels
can help prevent disease, make us feel ‘better than well,’
and even slow the aging process itself." ("Next Trillion"
audio, Feb. 2001)
- Michael
Lam, M.D., M.P.H., The Five Proven Secrets to Longevity:
"Fruits and vegetables are very high in antioxidants.
Unfortunately, diet by itself cannot provide the amount
of antioxidants needed for anti-aging purposes." (from
his website)
- Dr. Walter Willet of Harvard University:
"Until quite recently, it was taught that everyone in
the country gets enough vitamins through their diet and
that taking vitamin supplements just creates expensive urine.
I think we have proof this isn’t true." (Newsweek, June
7, 1993)
CANCER
-
Prostate Cancer Research Institute
Recommends Pharmanex' Tegreen By Name As Preventative
(March, 2002):
"We have suggested that Tegreen be used at a dose of one
capsule 3 times a day in patients with active prostate
cancer and perhaps once a day as a prevention against
prostate cancer."
-
Even the government-funded (NIH) National
Cancer Institute admits supplements (no companies
are mentioned) can prevent prostate cancer!
"Several studies are under way to explore how prostate
cancer might be prevented. These include the use of dietary
supplements, such as vitamin E and selenium. In addition,
recent studies suggest that a diet that regularly includes
tomato-based foods may help protect men from prostate
cancer."
-
Lycopene.com:
"Recent studies conducted by a Harvard professor indicate
that Lycopene, the red pigment of the tomato, which is
a powerful caroteniod, seems to be one of the most potent
antioxidants that works for prostate cancer prevention.
There is mounting evidence that caroteniods prevent damage
to DNA and help keep cancer from forming."
-
American
Association for Cancer Research, April 7, 2002:
"Green Tea Shows Protective Effect Against Gastric and
Esophageal Cancers: The first biomarker-based prospective
study of green tea and cancers of the stomach and esophagus
demonstrates a strong protective effect: subjects demonstrating
the presence of tea polyphenols in their single-void urine
specimens exhibit a lower risk for both cancers. Tea polyphenols
are antioxidants that have been shown to have chemoprotective
benefits for cancers at these and other sites."
-
Dr.
Andrew Weil (drweil.com), Dec. 7, 2001:
"My husband, 33, has non-Hodgkins lymphoma but is not
on chemotherapy. What are your thoughts on taking immune-stimulating
supplements and antioxidants? I'm concerned about aggravating
the lymphoma."
"I can't think of any reason for a cancer patient to avoid
using antioxidant supplements (unless they're undergoing
radiation therapy or chemotherapy), immune-stimulating
mushrooms, and green tea. They're all highly cancer protective.
I have had cancer patients on these regimens and have
found that they can be quite helpful."
"... selenium has shown to help prevent the occurence
of new cancers in those with a history of skin cancer."
-
Dr.
Andrew Weil (drweil.com):
"What can I do about breast cancer?"
"Take a multivitamin with folic acid, vitamin D and antioxidants
-- All these nutrients have been shown to be related to
risk of breast cancer. Although the diet should be the
key source of most of these, a good daily supplement can
provide insurance that your intake is adequate."
MACULAR DEGENERATION & CATARACTS
-
U.S. National Eye Institute (NEI):
"AMD is a serious and currently untreatable disease that
is the number one cause of vision impairment and acquired
blindness among aging Americans."
"... high levels of antioxidant vitamins and zinc significantly
reduce the risk of developing advanced age-related macular
degeneration (AMD) and its associated vision loss."
-
NewsRx.com, Dec. 7, 2001:
"Cataracts, which affect more than half of all Americans
age 65 and older, are the clouding of the lens that can
ultimately result in blindness. The Roche European American
Cataract Trial (REACT) found that supplements containing
vitamins C and E slowed the progression of cataracts."
-
Johanna M. Seddon, MD, Director of
the Epidemiology unit at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear
Infirmary:
"The high levels of nutrients that were evaluated in the
[Age-Related Eye Disease Study] are very difficult to
achieve from diet alone. This discovery is very exciting
because these dietary supplements are the first effective
treatment to slow the progression of the disease ..."
-
Nutrition
Research Newsletter, April, 1999; author Barbara J.
Lyle:
"Antioxidants have been proven to have a protective effect
on cataract formation, as observed in studies conducted
on animals. Carotenoids and vitamin E have the ability
to scavenge free radicals, so may play a role in the prevention
of this disease process in humans."
-
Natural
Health, Oct-Nov, 2001; author Julia Tolliver Maranan:
"Astaxanthin: this antioxidant shows promise in fighting
macular degeneration and boosting immune function. This
fat-soluble carotenoid is found in the red yeast Phaffia
rhodozyma, used in Asian cooking. It's also produced by
the algae Haematococcus and accumulates in the muscles
of salmon, shrimp, trout, and other pink seafood when
they eat this algae, which is what gives them their pink
hue. Astaxanthin kills free radicals in your body, staving
off age-related diseases like macular degeneration by
preventing these unstable molecules from damaging your
cells, according to Timothy Maher, Ph.D., astaxanthin
researcher and pharmaceutical sciences professor at the
Mass. College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences in Boston.
Astaxanthin also boosts the functioning of your immune
system by increasing the number and activity of T cells
and macrophages, two kinds of protective cells that fight
infection and cancer. Astaxanthin is available in pill
form. Take up to 2 mg per day to prevent macular degeneration
or cancer, recommends James McMillan, M.D., an eye physician
and surgeon in Bellevue, Wash."
-
Dr.
Andrew Weil (drweil.com):
"What can I do to prevent age-related macular degeneration?"
"Try to choose foods (or take supplements) that contain
vitamin C, vitamin E and lutein."
OXIDATION (FREE RADICAL) PROTECTION
-
Bruce N. Ames, Ph.D., Professor of
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Univ. of California
at Berkeley, 1998:
"Common micronutrient deficiencies are likely to damage
DNA by the same mechanism as radiation and many chemicals,
appear to be orders of magnitude more important, and should
be compared for perspective. Remedying micronutrient deficiencies
is likely to lead to a major improvement in health and
an increase in longevity at low cost."
-
Jack Pfeifer, M.D., October, 2000:
"LifePak continues to be the preeminent antioxidant, multi-vitamin
system in the world. It is the only product with prospective,
randomized, double blind clinical trials, which proves
that it actually functions as an antioxidant in the body.
This means that it will actually give us protection from
free radical damage."
